A doctoral position and a postdoctoral position in electronic structure and magnetism for strongly correlated materials
APCTP, Pohang, South Korea
Applications are invited for a doctoral position and a postdoctoral position in the Junior Research Group "Electronic structure and magnetism" to be established during the fall by Prof. Igor Di Marco at the Asia-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP), Pohang, South Korea.
APCTP (https://www.apctp.org), founded in 1996, is a non-governmental organization aiming for an international center dedicated to excellence in research and the training of young scientists in the Asia-Pacific region. APCTP offers a great research environment with strong connections to a number of active theoretical and experimental research groups at the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). APCTP has broad international agreements with many leading institutions around the globe for scientific exchanges.
The research performed by this group will focus on the following topics:
* electronic and magnetic properties of strongly correlated materials, ranging from complex oxides and rare-earth compounds to transition metals doped topological insulators;
* development of computational methods for strongly correlated systems, based e.g. on dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) or GW;
* development of theoretical methods for X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS);
* construction of a database of electronic properties of rare-earth compounds.
The requirements for these positions are the following:
PhD position (starting date: Jan~Jun 2018)
The candidate should have a degree in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Engineering or Materials Science, and be highly motivated to work in theoretical and/or computational physics. Basic knowledge of solid state physics, many-body physics and/or statistical physics is required. Previous programming experience (in particular with Fortran or C) is an advantage. Good knowledge of English is required. Your application package should include a brief cover letter (max 1 page), the names of one or two professional references (possibly including your thesis supervisor), your curriculum vitae with a list of publications (if any), and a list of university exams with grades.
Postdoctoral position (starting date: Jan-Jun 2018)
The candidate should have a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, Theoretical Chemistry or Materials Science and have demonstrated an excellent scientific record of publications. The candidate should have a good knowledge of solid state physics, many-body physics and/or magnetism. Previous experience in electronic structure calculations and/or many-body models is required. Previous programming experience (in particular with Fortran or C) is an advantage. Fluency in English is required. Your application package should include a brief cover letter (max 2 pages), the names of three professional references (possibly including your doctoral supervisors), your curriculum vitae with a list of publications, and a research statement of max 3 pages, where you describe your previous achievements and (briefly) your plans for future research.
Please send your application package to [email protected].
The initial appointments are for one year, but can be extended up to three or four years, depending on research performances and available funding. Review of applications will continue until the positions are filled.
